For many of the same reasons you created this post. That way I am also confident that if a file gets corrupted and I don't notice for a month, it's likely I cna get it back from an older version in the backup. I make sure to pick some from the newest restore point, some from the middle of the chain, and some from the oldest available. Myself, I do a test restore if a few random files every now and then. I know it's probably impractical to do a test restore of everything you have on account of time and storage limitations. The offsite datacenter was just implemented when I left the company, so I dint know what the testing schedule there was.īetween this and the occasional need for a file restored for a user, we were confident in the backups. This restore was used to update and wipe clean their test and development environment, so it wasn't a completely regular schedule depending on that was going on at the time. Every six months to a year, we did a test restore of everything from local storage. Every month, we did a test restore of a few random files (both from recent recovery points and also older ones). Even with something like this, I would to test restores.Īs an example, a client I had in the past had Veeam backups locally, and a replication to an offsite datacenter. Some products (like Veeam) have a function where it boots up your virtual machine from the backup, tests that it functions, shuts it down, and emails you the report. Backups are not a "set it and forget it" product and of you treat it that way you run bigger risk of being burned. If any company or product ceases to exist or function when I need it, I have two others on which I can rely.Īs to ensuring reliability, the only reliable way to test backup integrity is to do test restores as often as you feel you need to. Thus, now I use Arq to my storage server locally, Backblaze for cloud storage, and a straight up regular file copy to a couple of offline drives. The product never failed me, but as you know the company sort of pulled the rug out from under me on that one. I used to just use CrashPlan for everything (personally) and trust it 100%. ![]() VSphere Jumpstart scenario: aka.Tl dr: Do test restores, and use more than one backup methodology. These may resemble a large pair of scissors or, more recently, a power-driven toothed blade similar to human hair clippers. To remove the woollen fleece from the sheep requires a pair of shears. Fragments of woollen garments dating to circa 3000 BC exist in the Middle East, but the animals arrived in Europe much later, where the oldest wool textile, found in a Danish bog, dates to c. The history of wool begins around 6000 BC, where archaeological evidence in Iran suggests people kept sheep for their wool. From now on though, I'll be seeing it all through a brand new lens! When our Shetland yarn is tied onto that flying shuttle, racing back and forth across the warp, I'll be able to imagine it's passage back through time, and home again, weaving together the web of innovation and industry (including the destruction and despair) with the simple beauty of our sustainably raised and locally spun yarn, to create handcrafted throws that will hopefully be, practically, “Luddite approved”.From where does wool come? Most people will say sheep, which is true, but wool is also obtained from other animals, including goats, oxen, rabbits and camels. Weaving to me has always seemed like a completely benign trade, only slightly less domestic than knitting. Practically penniless and harassed by violent mobs, he left England and moved to France, where he neither knew anyone nor spoke the language. Though he received a patent for the Flying Shuttle, he was systematically cheated out of his patent royalties by factory owners, and he nearly bankrupted himself trying to litigate his claims. John Kay, himself, also suffered from the unintended consequences of his own invention. Thus necessitating, and facilitating the invention of the Spinning Jenny and other improvements to the textile industry which, in turn, helped launch the Industrial Revolution. It lasted until the British Army sent 14,000 soldiers to quell the rebellion, and the protesters either disbanded or were shot, hung or exiled to Australia.Īnother, and perhaps even broader, consequence of the invention was that the speed of weaving was so accelerated by the flying shuttle that the spinning industry could no longer keep up with production of the yarn needed. Whether, or not, Ned was a real person is up for debate, but the uprising in his name was very real. The group called themselves “Luddites” and retaliated against the industrialization of their craft by destroying the factories and machines which they believed were threatening their livelihood. ![]() The disgruntled (and unemployed) weavers banded together, choosing as their figurehead the mythical apprentice “Ned Ludd”, who is said to have taken revenge on an unfair employer by smashing his machinery. The flying shuttle automated the process, requiring only one person to operate a loom of any width, and eventually, half of the skilled textile workers in England were no longer needed or gainfully employed. That limited the width of cloth produced, or required two weavers working together at a wider loom. Until Kay's invention, the width of a loom that one person could operate was limited to the length of the weaver's outstretched arms, as they needed to send the shuttle (with the weft thread attached) back and forth through the warp. It helped to launch not only the Industrial Revolution and ensuing violent uprising but it effectuated the self imposed exile and impoverishment of John Kay himself. The shuttle, invented by John Kay, of England in 1733, was brilliant in its simplicity, and startling in its implications. The loom is equipped with a “flying shuttle” which at the time was a relatively recent and controversial invention. ![]() The older pieces sport the darkened luster of 200 years of age, while newer parts give evidence to necessary repairs brought on by generations of practical use. I'm not a weaver and I resisted the urge as I wouldn't have had a clue of what I'd be doing, but I am, none the less, completely drawn in by the industrial beauty of it. Perhaps it's just an oddity of mine, but I really wanted to touch the frames and move all the parts and pieces. With parts dating back to the 1700s, the loom is a functioning story board of the rich history of the textile industry. I was, in fact, immediately sucked down a rabbit hole of antiquity and folklore. We dropped yarn off at the weavers last week and I was fascinated by the loom that Karin's father brought over from Scotland. ![]() Guests can use entertainment activities, a sundeck and flat - screen TV. Place the leg tips over each other and then tie them with butcher twine. Unwrap the turkey, tuck the wing tips back behind the bird, and stuff the aromatics into the cavity. This will glaze the turkey during the last hour of the cooking process, creating a beautiful sheen, capturing the additional smoky flavor, and creating a unique sweet and smokey bite. We are using a mixture of bourbon, apricot jam, and butter. After stuffing, tie the legs together with butcher’s twine, this will create a better-looking cooked turkey and help slow the cooking of the white meat.įinally, we need to make our glaze. We prefer aromatics and fruit apples, onions, lemons, oranges, sage, and garlic make wonderful additions, and they impart flavor over the long slow smoke. You want to avoid filling the cavity with dense stuffing due to the lower temperatures in the smoker, you will never have safely cooked stuffing before the bird is completely overcooked. When it comes to stuffing, we are not talking about cornbread or sausage. Tuck the wing tips behind the breast to protect them from burning and create a better-looking final bird. Using the most accurate meat thermometers, we have found that 260☏ (127☌) is the best temperature for juicy white meat and tender cooked dark meat. It is also a clever idea to make sure your smoker is up and running during this time. Bring the turkey out of the cooler 45-60 minutes before you plan to start smoking. When it’s cooking day, you first need to prepare the turkey for the smoke and make the glaze. One day in the brine will work, but two days is best. ![]() Wrap the turkey tightly in plastic wrap and place it back into your cooler with a bag of ice to maintain a temperature under 40☏ (4.5☌). Spread the rest of the mixture evenly over the entire surface of the turkey. Mix your dry brine seasonings together and sprinkle about 2 Tablespoons in the cavity. This separation will create a space between the two as they cook, allowing the fat to render and the skin to become crispy. Once you have completely thawed the turkey, pat the bird dry and run your fingers under the skin to loosen it from the meat. Our suggestion is to incorporate orange and lemon zest with salt, sugar, onion powder, minced or dried sage, and cracked black pepper. We love the combination of citrus and smoke, the fresh bite plays well with the dark flavors of wood smoke and char. When it comes to the brine, we want to bring a bright and powerful flavor to the party. When it comes to smoking a turkey there are three areas that will bring flavor to the party. |
